Marcasur, the Latin American intellectual property publication, profiled Yolanda Álvarez in August 2025 as part of its series on professionals and the causes they pursue outside the office.
The piece follows two threads that run through her career. One is the practice itself: intellectual property and commercial litigation in Puerto Rico. The other is animal protection, which took her from a 2007 injunction against a proposed primate breeding facility, decided by the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico, to the drafting and lobbying of Act 154-2008, Puerto Rico’s animal protection statute, and to her current role as president of the Federación Protectora de Animales de Puerto Rico (FePA).
She also describes how the two shape each other. Advocacy, she says, made her a more patient litigator and one more focused on reaching agreements early for her clients. Among the projects she discusses is an agreement with the Department of Education to train 6,000 teachers in humane education.
The profile closes with a message from Yolanda to her colleagues in the legal profession: cada vida salvada transforma también la suya
(every life saved also transforms your own).
